The short answer
If your target customers are global or you want maximum brand recognition, choose .com. If you specifically want to signal "Indian business" or the exact .com is taken, choose .in. Choose .co.in only as a fallback when both .com and .in for your desired name are already registered.
.com — the global default
.com is still the extension people assume by default when they try to remember or guess a website address. It carries no geographic signal, which is an advantage if you plan to serve customers outside India or want your brand to feel international from day one. The tradeoff: because it is the oldest and most popular extension, common and short words are far more likely to be already registered.
.in — the Indian-specific choice
.in is the country-code extension for India, and it directly communicates "this is an Indian business" to visitors and to search engines, which can be a genuine advantage for a business primarily serving Indian customers. Availability is often better than .com for the exact name you want, and pricing is typically lower.
.co.in — the practical fallback
.co.in exists specifically as a second-choice extension for Indian businesses and organisations. It carries slightly less brand weight than .com or .in on their own, but it is a perfectly legitimate, functional choice — and often the cheapest of the three — when your exact desired name is unavailable elsewhere.
Does the extension affect SEO?
Modern search engines rank pages primarily on content quality, relevance and backlinks — not on which extension you use. A country-code extension like .in can help slightly with local relevance signals for India-specific searches, but it will not meaningfully help or hurt your ranking compared to a well-optimised .com or .co.in site. Choose based on branding and availability, not a belief that one extension ranks inherently higher.
A simple decision framework
Use this order of preference when checking availability for your desired name:
- 1. Is the exact .com available? If yes and your business isn't exclusively India-focused, take it.
- 2. Is the exact .in available? If your business is India-focused, or the .com is taken, this is an excellent choice.
- 3. Is .co.in available? A solid fallback that still keeps your exact name intact.
- 4. Consider a close variant (add a word, use a synonym) before settling for a very different name just to get .com.
Can you register more than one?
Yes, and it is common practice for growing businesses to register the .com, .in and .co.in versions of their name together, then redirect the ones they are not actively using to their primary site. This protects your brand from competitors or squatters registering the other variants, for a relatively small extra cost per year.
